Elizabeth Hoare Embroidery Gallery Liverpool Cathedral

When visiting the city for the first time in 2006, whilst showing in the John Moores 24 painting exhibition at the Walker Gallery, Brown visited the Elizabeth Hoare embroidery collection at Liverpool Cathedral. Often using lace and fabric as subjects in her work the artist was naturally attracted to the embroideries and their makers - similarities abound between needlework and the artist's method of painting - the meditative repetition and process of doing and undoing. The Christian symbolism used in the imagery was also bound to intrigue but the portraits of angels were particularly compelling. Working from these interests Brown has produced a series of small oil paintings on aluminium and watercolours on paper in response to and shown alongside the embroideries.

Admission fee to the gallery applies as part of the Cathedral's 'Tower Experience'. Disabled access limited.
